Hip Hop News: Mikkey Halsted: Kanye West Considered Signing to Cash Money Records

Towards the end of “Last Call,” the last track on Kanye West’s classic debut album,The College Dropout, the Chicago emcee retraces the triumphs and potholes of his career up to that point. One of the potholes depicted was about how an unnamed artist who was signed to West’s burgeoning label,Kanman Productions, left unexpectedly.

“One of my homies that was one of my artists, he got signed,” West says. “But it was supposed to really go through my production company, but he ended up going straight with the company. So, like I’m just straight holdin’ the phone, gettin’ the bad news that dude was trying to leave my company.”

Over the years it was revealed that the artist that left West’s company was Chicago rapperMikkey Halsted, who eventually signed with Cash Money Records. During a recent conversation with DJBooth, Halsted detailed how Kanye West considered signing to the New Orleans imprint as well.

Mikkey Halsted Details Cash Money Business Practices

According to Halsted, Cash Money was interested in signing the entire Kanman Productions and rebrand it as Cash Money Midwest. West rejected the offer because he was more interested in moving to New York and working with Roc-a-Fella Records. Since Halsted’s sister, Miss Criss, was also offered a deal with Cash Money and initially Birdman agreed that his Kanye West-produced project would become his debut album, he decided to sign to the label.

“So I decided to make that move and as soon as I was in New Orleans, the next day I come up there asking about when Kanye was gonna get started on my album,” Halsted says. “They were like, ‘Man, we found out he samples, we don’t wanna use no Kanye beats because we don’t fuck with sampling.’

“He [Birdman] didn’t want to pay for clearing samples and he felt like that was going to affect the publishing and that was part of the racket that he was running. He made me sign over my publishing, everybody that he signed he took their publishing, took everything, so it was affecting his bottom-line.

“At that point I was like, ‘Man, fuck this, you tricked me! If Kanye can’t get no money out the deal, that was part of the agreement. That’s why Kanye was cool with it, because they were going to pay him half upfront for all his beats. And so I quit, Baby was taking off his shirt off, yelling, acting like he gonna kill me in the studio…”

Halsted says Birdman eventually agreed to paying West for five tracks he created for the project, used the money to move to New Jersey, which lead to him signing to Roc-a-Fella Records.

During a 2011 interview with Brooklyn Bodega, Halsted stated that Cash Money attempted to change his image after signing. He also said he recorded over 70 songs before leaving the label.

“I was helping them but [Birdman] wanted to change my whole style, wanted me to rock Reebok soldiers and shit,” he said. “I wasn’t with that shit so my album never came out. Being the stand up nigga that I am, I tried to stick it out but sent my sister home to Chicago because Baby wanted us to change, get tattoos and shit. I said, ‘Fuck you, I ain’t getting no tats.’ I put in work with them niggas though; I recorded over seventy songs before I bounced.”

Entertainment News: Star Wars Episode 8 to Start Production Later This Month

Production on Star Wars Episode 8 will begin later this month. The movie is to start shooting on an Irish location already filmed for the upcoming Episode 7: The Force Awakens.
JJ Abrams used the tiny island of Skellig Michael as a location when making Episode 7, and now director Rian Johnson will kick off production on the next part of the Star Wars saga in the same place. The news was initially announced by Irish news channel RTE, with Entertainment Weekly subsequently confirming that this was indeed the start of Episode 8's production, rather than last-minute reshoots onEpisode 7 as initially thought.
Plans to film again at Skellig have caused some concern over the environmental cost of a large film crew spending time at the location. In particular, worries about the impact of helicopters on the flight patterns of local aviation have prompted Irish Arts Minister Heather Humphreys to defend her decision to allow Lucasfilm to return there.
In a statement, she said: "Specialist staff from my Department have been in discussions with Lucasfilm since March of this year in relation to a limited amount of filming, expected to last two to four days. Based on the scientific evidence available to me, I am satisfied that what is being proposed by Lucasfilm will not adversely impact the integrity of the Special Protection Area on Sceilg MhichĂl".
Last week, it was confirmed that Benicio Del Toro would play a villainous role in the film, which is due for release in May 2017.
As for Episode 9, although it is still four years away from release, yesterday director Colin Trevorrow teased an image on Twitter, implying that pre-production was also underway on the final part of the next Star Wars trilogy:
Trevorrow was announced as director of Episode 9 at the D23 expo in August. This year, he became one of the most successful directors of all time, as his dinosaur blockbuster Jurassic World became thethird highest earner in film history.

Gaming News: New Xbox One Experience Rolling Out Soon for Testers

The Xbox One will see its "biggest update yet" this November with an overhaul of the dashboard and more. Before the New Xbox One Experiences arrives, however, Microsoft will let Xbox One Preview Program members test it out. That pre-release testing period is starting soon, Microsoft has announced.
"Like all features in the Preview Program, this will be a work-in-progress until it launches in early November," Microsoft's Mike Ybarra cautions in a post on Xbox Wire.
Due to the size and significance of the update, Microsoft is slowly rolling out the new update, beginning with people who have "historically submitted the most feedback." It won't be available for everyone right away. "Our goal is to start with a group, get feedback, then roll out to larger groups for additional feedback over time," Ybarra explained.
Here's a rundown of how it will work over the next couple of weeks.
  • If you're a member of the Xbox One Preview Program, you will get an invitation sent to you in an Xbox Live message.
  • From the invitation launch the Xbox Preview Dashboard and select the registration option.
  • You can then opt-in by selecting "Preview – New Xbox One Experience."
  • If you choose not to participate in this update (you just leave your registration as preview), you will continue to receive "regular" Preview Program updates going forward. This will not remove you from the Xbox Preview Program.
  • New builds will regularly roll out over a period of several weeks to those who opt in, and our engineering team will work to improve the features and fix any bugs they identify throughout the preview testing.
Microsoft's Xbox One Preview Program, overall, recently got more difficult to get into. The company announced last month that it is scaling back the volume of invitations, as the program is reaching a "near-capacity" level.
The New Xbox One Experience includes a long list of changes and new features, perhaps the most notable of which is backwards compatibility for Xbox 360games. The update completely overhauls the Home screen to make it "faster and easier." In addition, there will be a new Community section to help make the console "more social." It also comes with a "revamped OneGuide" that aims to be the one destination you need for TV, movies, and video apps. Finally, the New Xbox One Experience adds optimizations to the Xbox Store to help you find the games and content you want easier.
Check out this post on the Xbox Wire for a full rundown of what to expect.

Gaming News: Assassin's Creed Syndicate Taps Grammy-Nominated Composer

Austin Wintory, who was nominated for a Grammy for the PlayStation game, Journey, has been announced as the composer for Ubisoft's upcoming action-adventure game, Assassin's Creed Syndicate.
Wintory said in a statement that he is personally passionate about music from the 19th century, the setting of Syndicate. "I've had a long-held passion for the chamber music of the 19th Century; the intensity one can get from this sort of music is quite distinct from the massive force of an orchestra," he said.
Wintory's orchestral score is 3-plus hours and features solo performances by instrumentalists Sandy Cameron and Tina Guo. The music aims to not only capture the overall tone of the Assassin's Creed franchise, but also to "evoke the prowess and sarcasm" of Syndicate's two heroes, Jacob and Evie Frye.
Syndicate launches on October 23 for Xbox One andPlayStation 4, while the PC edition arrives November 19.
Wintory is a video game music veteran. His other credits include The Banner SagaLeisure Suit Larry: ReloadedThe Order: 1886, and Saints Row: Gat Out of Hell.

Entertainment News: Marvel's Jessica Jones Gets Moody in New Trailer for Netflix Series

Jessica Jones, Netflix's latest Marvel TV show, has been given a release date and a new teaser trailer. The show, which follows the success of the streaming giant's previous Marvel series, Daredevil, will debut in its entirety on November 20.

The first season of Jessica Jones will feature 13 episodes. Check out the teaser here:

Like DaredevilJessica Jones takes place in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, alongside Marvel Studios' blockbuster movies, and the shows Agents Of SHIELD, and Agent Carter. It stars Krysten Ritter--best known for her role as Jane in Breaking Bad--as a failed superhero who has abandoned the crimefighting life to become a private detective in New York. Former Doctor Who star David Tennant co-stars, alongside Mike Colter, who plays Luke Cage, a character that will also be getting his own Netflix show in 2016.

In July, Entertainment Weekly reported that during a roundtable interview on the Television Critics Association press tour, showrunner Melissa Rosenberg had spoken about the approach she was taking to the show, and how it compared to Daredevil.

"Jessica Jones is a very, very different show than Daredevil," she said. "We exist in a cinematic universe, [and] the mythology of the universe is connected, but they look very different, tonally they’re very different. That was my one concern coming in: Am I going to have to fit into Daredevil or what’s come before? And the answer is: 'No. That's why we're hiring you, for your point of view.'"

Gaming News: How NHL 16's Focus on Basics Can Make You a Better Player

When the goal horn blasts while I'm playing a round of NHL 15, I'm not usually the one setting it off. Ever since the shift to a more simulation-based game, my friends have been much better than me at EA NHL series.
It's not that I'm bad, I just hit a plateau at some point. I wasn't sure why I kept losing face-offs, or why I couldn't penetrate a specific team's defensive line, so I'd try new things; sometimes they'd work, but even then I wouldn't completely understand why. But after spending several hours with NHL 16 and its visual on-ice trainer at a recent hands-on preview event, I started to get a handle on what it takes to succeed against highly skilled opponents.
"[The on-ice trainer is] an adaptive system that starts off by teaching you the very, very basics." says Sean Ramjagsingh, the lead producer of the NHL franchise.
It seems like an integrated, static tutorial at first, but the visual trainer is surprisingly dynamic. It augments other players and the ice with hints, pass suggestions, and a shot lane. Once you've performed certain actions enough times, like poke-checking your opponent and winning face-offs, the hints hovering over the skaters will start to disappear.
"It'll show you how many times you need to complete pushing up on the right stick to make that go away," Ramjagsingh says. "You do it three times, that goes away, and it takes you to the next piece of feedback, telling you how to do a wrist shot."
I did, at times, find that I needed the trainer hints to stick around a little longer, especially with face-offs; thankfully, you can turn different parts of the trainer on and off, making it possible for the visual assistant to stay permanently. Because of this, I worried I'll become dependent and never take some of these training wheels off due to how it simplifies parts of the game.
Despite my concerns, the on-ice trainer helped me figure out exactly how the face-offs work. First off, the on-screen hint will let you know exactly when to go for the puck in order to retrieve it. The trainer lets you know your timing and the reason you won or lost the puck; even if you have good timing, the opposing player could have a higher face-off skill, overpowering your skater to secure control. This let me know that I did all the right things, so I wasn't discouraged from taking the same approach in my next encounter.
The shooting was another aspect of the trainer that I found pretty useful. When you're in front of the opposing team's net with the puck in tow, a cone appears, starting at your skater's stick and ending at the goal line. If there's a good scoring opportunity, blue lanes will indicate the best route for the puck to take. This all changes based on where you, the goalie, and the rest of the players are situated; if you have a skater screening the goalie while you set up, there's going to be a much larger shot lane for you to take advantage of; alternatively, the shot lane shrinks if opposing skaters are blocking your view.
